February 18, 2003:
Illustrated below is a C. DREW coppering hammer from a Maine collection. Coppering hammers, I believe, were used to attach copper sheathing to the outer surface of wooden ships to help protect the wood beneath the waterline.
In the late 1920s, C. Drew & Co. offered their clients coppering hammers in four formats:
1) 21 oz. (head only?). Crucible tool steel. Stamped "C. DREW & CO." Polished pean and claws.
2) 21 oz. Solid Steel. All black.
3) 25 oz. Crucible tool steel. Stamped "C. DREW & CO." Polished pean and claws.
4) 25 oz. Solid steel. All black.
Thanks are extended to Rick Floyd who provided the photos.
