The following information is from:

"Crucible Tool Steel Blades, Heavy Pattern. . . .An extra high grade tool in demand by Carpenters that want the best . . . Packed loose." (per catalogues No. 36, 37)

"Spring steel, nicely tempered. Tapered blade. Heavy handle provides perfect striking surfaces. (per catalogue: May 1, 1954)

"Taper forged blade tempered for rough work. Fully guaranteed. Strong enough for full prying. Small size for carpenters. Long size for slaters and roofers." (per catalogues No. 59, 63)

"Long a DREW favorite, this tool is used for the removal of shingles or roofing slates, especially where a small area is to be taken off, without disturbing the balance of the job. There is no other tool that can remove a single slate or shinglewithout damaging either the piece removed, or surrounding pieces." (per catalogue: June 1968)

Below is illustrated the use of the DREW Shingle Ripper for removing shingles. The same procedure can be used when working with slate.
The Thin blade is inserted up underneath the shingle to be removed and one claw is hooked over one of the nails securing the shingle to the wall.
A sharp blow with a hammer on the flattened anvil of the handle of the shingle ripper will shear the nail at the wall. Using the opposite claw on the head of the tool, the process is repeated for succeeding nails, until the shingle is free.
The shingle can then be removed and used again all without disturbing adjacent pieces.
