The following information is from:

"Sometimes called a SAG HARBOR spear, the DREW winter eel spear has eight hooked tines surrounding a central spear. Each tine is forged, bent, and heat treated in the same manner as described for the clam rake, and because of this process, the spear is able to withstand the repeated shocks that occur when probing for winter eels in rocky river bottoms."
